In the world there are many animals and living things, but few will give you as wide and profound an understanding of the natural world and one’s place in it as does the reclusive abalone. Mind you, abalone were at one point not quite so elusive, but as their numbers dwindled from over-enthusiastic harvesting and other habitatual complications, they slowly slithered back from their shallow shoreline hangouts of yesteryear and into darker, deeper waters.

At first glance, abalone may appear to be merely just one more delicacy fit for only the elite, and the wannabe elite to feast upon, and not much else. Scratch just beneath the surface, however, and one finds that abalone have a history nearly as rich as humans, and actually have existed on the planet for eons longer than we have. Abalone have been a part of human culture literally since human culture began.
